Enlisted July 5, 1861 at Charlotte, NC, as a Private, Company D, 7th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry, Confederate States Army. At enlistment, Private Bolton, a 23 year old harness maker residing in Charlotte, Mechlenburg County, confirmed that he was born in Philadelphia, PA. Private Bolton was wounded in the hand at the Battle of the Wilderness, May 5, 1864.

After the Civil War, Bolton returned to Philadelphia and was employed as a brass finisher. Bolton appears in the 1890 Veterans Census as a "crossed out Confed," confirming his enlistment in the 7th NC Infantry.
