Feb 24, 1888, New Milford Gazette:
On Thursday, the 16th inst., this community was shocked by the news that John C. Ackley was dead. Although every one knew and felt that Mr. Ackley was dangerously ill, yet no one was prepared for the sad news of his death, and the whole community was suddenly plunged into mourning. He had been ill but little more than two weeks, and everythng was done that loving hands could do for the sufferer. His brother, Mr. George B. Ackley, left home and business and remained by the bedside of the sick one until he too was striken by the same dread disease, pneumonia, and is at present very sick, though improving.

Mr. Ackley was one of those rare persons of whom it may justly be said he had not an enemy in the world and was never known to do a wrong thing. We think he approached as near perfection as it is possible for mankind to realize.
The funeral took place at his late residence on Sunday the 19th, and was attended by a large concourse of people, all of whom mourn the loss of this good man. Rev. A. Isham, assisted by the Rev. Henry Upson, were the officiating clergymen. The family and relatives of the deceased have the sympathy of every one in their great affliction.

The address of the Rev. Mr. Upson was expressive of comfort and consolation to the afflicted family as was also the prayer, by Rev. Mr. Upson. The singing of selected hymns was by members of the Hill choir, assisted by Mr. and Mrs. S. Cogswell, F. Bolles and Mrs. Whittlesey of New Preston.

The internment was in the cemetery at Upper Merryall, where he was laid to rest beside the grave of a young daughter, in the family lot.
