Johannes/Johan (John) Tobias Nelson was born on February 11, 1849 , probably in Austad, Lyngdal, Norway. He was the youngest son of Christen Nielsen and Lovise Larsdatter while living on the Saudland farm.

Lyngdal is located 30 miles west of Kristiansand where his future wife was from. In 1865, he had moved to Kristiansand to learn the trade of a blacksmith. In America, Johannes would practice that trade. There was another student from Lyngdal named Tobias Christian who was a couple years older than Johan. He was living with Mikkel Mikkelsen who was his master blacksmith.

We do not know when he met Jensine. He may have come to America before returning to Norway and marrying Jensine. He arrived in New York on April 27, 1872 on the ship, Spain, through Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland. There was also a Johannes Nelson who arrived on October 28, 1869 in New York on the ship, India. So this may be the basis for believing that our Johannes came over prior to coming in 1872.

There is a conflict in dates when he married Jensine Karoline Jenssen. Were they married on September 27, 1873 in Kristiansand, just before she moved to America? Her death certificate said that they married on September 28, 1874 in Detroit, but this is not necessarily a reliable source for this information. It had to be 1874 because when she boarded the ship, she was listed as unmarried.

They were living in Wheeling in Rice County in 1880. At some point, John and Jensine settled in the small village of Spring Creek (later becoming Dennison, Minnesota). They were the first ones in town to build a house. He was the town's blacksmith and retired at the age of 64. He also was listed as owning a farm in the 1900 Census in the Northfield Township, Rice County. It also indicated that he came to America a year after his wife arrived. In 1910, he is still listed as a farmer in Rice County, but he is shown as Johan and his wife, Jensine.
