A Sarah E. Bennett appears in the 1860 Federal Census of Center Township, Porter County, Indiana, enumerated on June 13, 1860, by Thomas J. Merrifield. It is presumed that this is the same Sarah E. Bennett buried in Kimball Cemetery. This census enumeration provides an age of 2 years for Sarah, which conflicts with the age that was supposedly inscribed on her now lost tombstone. However, whomever transcribed the tombstone may have made an error is the tombstone was heavily weathered at the time, which is common problem with such tombstones.

The 1860 Federal Census lists Albert Bennet (age 28) and Louisa Bennet (age 22) as her inferred parents. Thomas J. Bennett (age 5) is enumerated as an inferred brother of Sarah. It is believed that Louisa was Albert Bennett's second wife and likely not the mother of Sarah E. Bennett.
