Leah Margaret Adkins was born January 19, 1910 at Maitland, Mo. and passed from this life in her home in Onawa on Saturday evening, February 8. Death came suddenly. She had reached the age of 59 years.
At the age of four she moved with her parents to Clarinda, where she grew to womanhood, attending the public schools and graduating from the Clarinda high school.
Twenty-one years ago she came to Onawa from Clarinda and became the director of the Monona County Department of Social Welfare, the same position she held at the time of her passing.
June 25, 1950 she was united in marriage with Raymond Adkins. To this union one daughter, Terry Rae was born. Mr. Adkins preceded her in death April 20, 1965.
She was an active member of the First Christian Church of Onawa, a board member of the Low Rent Housing Authority of Onawa, past president of Iowa Welfare Directors Ass'n, officer in American Public Welfare Ass'n, a graduate with a B.A. degree from Iowa State University at Ames and a former member of the Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include her daughter, Terry of Onawa; a sister, Miss Allene Milleson of Onawa; two brothers, Fred Milleson of Bolckow, Mo. and John Milleson of Clarinda; seven nephews; five nieces and a number of other relatives and a great host of friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 11 at the First Christian Church in Onawa. Rev. Everett Epperson officiated. Organist for the service was Clara Kelley.
Active bearers were John Tyson, Alvin Hyatt, Jess Ooten, Gunner Olson, George Strunk and Everett Sorenson.
Honorary bearers for the service were Earl Snyder, Merle Mock, Phil Cato, Jon Jackson, Carl Rieff, Dr. Leo Gaukel, Howard Rease and John Beardaley. Interment was at the Onawa Cemetery with arrangement by Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa.
