Dean of Stock Exchange, 78, Succumbs ~~
Joseph Milton Allen, oldest active member of the Salt Lake Stock Exchange, died Monday at his residence, 58 W. 8th South, after a brief illness.
Associates gave his age as about 78 years.
Mr. Allen who had lived in Salt Lake City throughout his career, was the son of Joseph M. and Julia Sims Allen. His father brought one of the first hardware stocks to Salt Lake City and established a pioneering hardware store opposite the present Z.C.M.I. site. His mother had crossed the plains with an early emigrant company.
Originally the owner and manager of the old Salt Lake City Soda Water Co. and the Salt Lake Coca Cola Co., Mr. Sims sold his holding in 1925 and entered the brokerage business as partner in the Cole-Allen Brokerage Co.
A member of the Salt Lake Stock exchange for 27 years, he was for years active on the board of governors of the exchange.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Pearl Leith Allen, and two sisters, Mrs. Kay Allen Snell, Salt Lake City, and Mrs. Gertrude Allen Moss, Chicago.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted Thursday at the family plot in City Cemetery, with George Sims in charge. Friends may call at 574 E. 1st South on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and until noon Thursday. Friends will omit flowers by family request.
