Enlisted in Company A of the Reorganized Fourth Michigan Infantry on July 26, 1864, for 3 years. Promoted to Corporal on September 2, 1864. Admitted to Harper Hospital, Detroit, Michigan, on June 27, 1865. Discharged from service at Detroit, Michigan, on August 8, 1865.

Death certificate shows he was the son of William H. and Moria (?) Barnes born February 2, 1847 Michigan and died on December 5, 1910 in Alma, Gratiot Co., Michigan at the age of 63 years 11 months and 3 days.
