Peter Crawley was born in 1834 in Prescott, Lancashire, England; the son of Abraham and Martha Crawley.
After migrating to the United States Peter enlisted at Charles Town, Virginia as a Private into Co. "I" of the Confederate Virginia 12th Cavalry for a period of three years. It appears though that Peter Crawley had misgivings about the war after enlisting, because as of October 31, 1863 it was recorded on his Muster Roll cards that he had been "absent without leave since July 22, 1862" and had "never reported for duty after enlisting". He was, however, carried on the Confederate records, as the last entry was dated October 31, 1863. Upon his death, however, his obituary would state that he had served 12 months and had been wounded before his release from military duty.
After the war had ended Peter Crawley migrated again, this time to Australia arriving aboard the Kings Hope at Sydney, New South Wales; on July 9, 1887. After his arrival Peter made his way north to Queensland, Australia; living some 40 to 50 years in Queensland, mostly around the city of Rockhampton. He was one of the oldest members of the Alliance Friendly Society and was at one time a member of the ‘Fire Brigade' and the ‘Rifle Volunteers'. His wife to be, Sara Alice Carlile, had arrived in Queensland prior to Peter, aboard the "Utopia"; in 1862.
In 1876 Peter married Miss. Sara Carlile and they had a son, William David, who was born in 1877.
Peter Crawley died on May 31, 1918 at 75 years of age, still living on Weinholt Street in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia and was subsequently buried in the Rockhampton General Cemetery. He was survived by his wife Sara and his son, William David; a shunter operator from Emerald, Queensland
