The Rev. Cranfill, an active minister in area Baptist churches affiliated with Rehoboth Baptist Association for more than 48 years, died at 3:08 p.m. Friday, May 15,1992, after suffering heart failure at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. He had been a surgical patient and failed to survive coronary catheterization.
George had a varied career as a farmer, rural mail carrier, postal employee for 37 years, minister and interim minister of a dozen area Baptist churches. He was called on frequently to officiate funerals of many friends and acquaintances of various religious affiliaties.
One of seven children of Benjamin Franklin and Mintie(Askren) Cranfill, he was born July 26,1912, and was reared on a farm in the Clear Springs neighborhood between Hillsboro and Irving.
He attended rural schools and graduated from Hillsboro High School with the Class of 1930. He and Opal Roemelin of Van Burensburg were married Jan. 8,1933, at Irving and they became parents of three children. Mrs. Cranfill died April 14,1974. His second marriage was to Elizabeth ( Chesser) Stewart, widow of Melvin Stewart, at Calvary Baptist Church in Hillsboro on May 18,1975
He leaves his wife, sons, Donald L. and Darrell G., both of rural Hillsboro and daughter, Doris V. Scroggins of Palatka,Fla.; Step-sons, Bob and Jim Stewart, both of Morrisonville; sister, Lillie Cunningham of Hillsboro; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren.
Brothers, Alva and Ben Cranfill and sisters, Mae Knight, Nellie Manley and an infant sister have died.
