Hiram was the son of Charles and Olive Barton, born in Pokagon, Cass County, Michigan. His family removed to Centerville, (later known as Merrillville), Lake County, Indiana in September, 1848. He married Martha Rooney on September 2, 1858 in Lake County.
Hiram enlisted in the Civil War as a private on August 9, 1862, where he served Company A, Indiana 99th Infantry Regiment. He mustered out on July 17, 1865.
He and his wife Martha, had four children, two of whom reached maturity: Lydia O. (Silas Zuvers), and Viola A.(Simsen G. Smith and Stanley Soderstrom).
He authored the chapter about Merrillville, Indiana in the book: History of Lake County. Hiram states in the book,that he was a carpenter and then became a salesman for the Salter Medicine Company. He provides very interesting information about the Merrillville area in his piece.
