MRS. JAMES F. BUCKLEY, 64, CLUBWOMAN, DIES SUDDENLY
Stricken Leaving For State Meeting
Mrs. Helen Porter (Garfield) Buckley, 64, widow of James F. Buckley, died suddenly this morning in front of the garage at her home, 29 Waverly street. She was preparing to get her car, in which she was to take Woman's Club members to the annual fsll meeting of the Massachusetts State Federation of Women's Clubs in Stoneham, when she was stricken.
Mrs. Buckley was treasurer of the State Federation and was well known throughout the city and State for her efficient and gracious manner.
Patrolmen Persichillo and Sweeney of the Brockton police department were called to the home and found Mrs. Buckley dead. Medical Examiner Peirce H. Leavitt was called and pronounced death due to natural causes. Dr. Charles D. McCann also was called.
Mrs Buckley's husband was killed in an acident in March, 1945, when a car in which he and several others were riding crashed into the rear of a parked truck.
She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. L. Franklin Garfield. She was a past president of the Woman's Club of Brockton and was active in the State Federation, serving on its executive board. She was vice - chairman of headquarters, served two years as chairman of religion and inter-group understanding and for the past two years as chairman of the division of religion.
Mrs. Buckley was prominent in Deborah Sampson Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, of which she was a past regent and served on various committees.
She was also a member of the Early American Glass Club and the Past Presidents' Club of the State Federation.
Mrs. Buckley was a graduate of Brockton High school and Smith College. She was always interested in community achievements and headed committees on various occasions. She was a member of the Universalist-Unitarian church and took much interest in the activities there, a past president of the YPRU, a former secretary of the Ten Times One Club, a member of the College Club of Brockton and vice-president of the Old Stoughton Musical Society.
She leaves two sons, James Garfield Buckley and Charles Porter Buckley, both of Braintree.
She also leaves two grandchildren, Prudence H. and Charles P. Buckley.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 1:30 P. M. in the funeral home, 309 Main street. Interment will be in Union cemetery.
