John worked for Mr. Poulson in the molasses mill and for Mr. Vincent getting wood out of the canyon for winter. He also worked at a saw mill at Bridal Veil Falls.
In 1899, at age 19 he went to Mercur to work in the mines but didn't like being underground so he tried ranching at a ranch in Park City. Ranch Work slacked up in the winter so he went to Delta, Colorado where he worked on the railroad, but was glad to go back to the ranch in the spring.
In 1902 he came to Provo and worked for T.J. Schofield and a Mr. Greer, caring for cattle and working around a butcher shop. Later that year he got a job at Olmstead and worked there for 3 years.
Tom had a fancy one seated buggy and foxy horse. One day as he and his brother-in-law Will Davis were coming down the Canyon road about 2300 North, the horse ran away and tipped the buggy over. They were both arrested for reckless buggy driving.
On the 14 Dec 1903 Tom was married to Elnora Davis by Bishop Alexander Gillespie. A party was held at Nora's home where they received the gifts and well wishes of their family and friends. Tom's mother and father gave them a beautiful clock which ticked in their home till the place was dismantled.
Their first home was the "Little room" on Tom's fathers place. It was here Clarence was born 21 July 1904.
They went to Lark, Utah for Tom to work in the mines. Tom and Nora moved back to Provo and lived at 1800 North 150 East where BYU stadium now stands. Tom helped make the first BYU Football Stadium and dug basements for many houses.
Soon after Leah was born, they started to build a new house for themselves at 1700 North 500 East on some of Tom's fathers property. While the building was going on they lived in a tent under the Mulberry tree near Grandfather Ashtons house. Nora was in hopes of being in the new house for the birth of their third baby, but Frank couldn't wait, and on 8 July 1909 he was born in Grandmother Ashtons front room. Finally in Oct 1909 they moved into their new home and lived there the rest of their lives.
