Son of John W. Criswell (1813 Ohio - 1890 West Virginia) and Margaret Burrows (1813 Ohio - 1880 West Virginia).

Joseph was the first husband of Nancy Morris who died in 1894 at Gravelly, Yell County, Arkansas.

Second wife was Mary Ann Noakes, whom he married 10/12/1896 in Norman, Cleveland County, Oklahoma. She died at Englewood, Los Angeles County, California in 1955 and is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Joseph was a Civil War veteran. His father also fought in the war, serving in the same regiment but in Company A while Joseph served in Company L and then Company P.

The government marker on Joseph's grave is incorrect as he served with a Union regiment, the 6th West Virginia Infantry, not the 6th Virginia which was a Confederate unit. He was an enlisted man when he first enlisted and reached the rank of sergeant. At the end of the war he had been promoted to 2nd Lieutenant.

During the war, his regiment lost 8 Enlisted men killed and/or mortally wounded and 2 Officers and 167 Enlisted men by disease for a total of 177. The regiment was organized for railroad guard duty and served on line of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad by detachments, at various points west of Sleepy Hollow for their entire term.
