Final Rites for "Zeke" Abernethy

A large group of relatives and friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Winston Murphree Sunday afternoon to pay final tribute to C V (Zeke) Abernethy, brother of Mrs. Murphree, who passed away early Saturday afternoon. The rites were conducted by the Rev. W R Hammontree, pastor of the Methodist Church, of which Mr. Abernethy was a member, assisted by the Rev. George H Gay, pastor of the Baptist Church. Burial was in the I O O F Cemetery with Barry Funeral Home in charge.

Pallbearers were A W James, R A Dean, D S Cunningham, Sam Dottery, L S Brewster and Walter Simpson.

After serving eight months in the army, Mr. Abernethy was discharged this spring. Following his arrival home he was employed by Wilson and Company for a short time. He was with the Okolona Garment Company when he was taken ill three weeks prior to his death. Following a week's treatment at the Baptist Hospital, Memphis, he was brought home Friday afternoon. He took a sudden turn for the worse soon after arriving and passed away the following afternoon.

Mr. Abernethy, who was 44, was born and reared in Okolona, where he was a member of a prominent family, being a son of the late I V Abernethy, who served several terms in the State Legislature, and the late Mrs. Abernethy.

In addition to Mrs. Murphree with whom he made his home, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. H C Hume, of Owensboro, Kentucky, and Mrs. O R Clark, and two brothers, O B Abernethy and Luther Abernethy. All of these and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Grady Abernethy, were here for the rites Sunday.
