Birth: May, 1835
New York, USA
Death: Jan. 26, 1914
El Paso County
Colorado, USA

Hiram J Abbey was born May 1835 in New York as were his parents. He later as of the 1860 US Census was living in Caledonia Minnesota. He was a Veteran of Civil War having served as a Private in Company K, 11th Minnesota infantry regiment. He was a member of Post No. 19, G. A. R., Colorado City, Colo. After the war he was recorded in the 1870 US Census as a farmer and still living in Minnesota and married to Christine Abbey, born in Pennsylvania 1836. They had at the time 7 children, the oldest 3; Clarinda 15, Henry 13, and Luanda Abbey 12 were all born in Minnesota. Amelia 9, Elworth 5, Hiram Jr 3, and Lillie Abbey 3 months were all born in Nebraska. Sometime between 1870 and 1877 they moved to El Paso county Colorado because that is where he owned land in West Creek near Colorado Springs. He is a Colorado Pioneer and mentioned in the records of the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum and on the Pioneers Park Memorial in Pioneer Park in Colorado Springs on Cenotaph Street. In 1877 his wife Christena died perhaps from the childbirth of daughter Christena who died a little over a year later in May of 1878 and is buried along with the mother in lot 33. In 1880 the US Census has Hiram age 45 married to Margaret Robertson, (1844-1928), age 32 with Newton 12 (b. Minn), and Worth Abbey 7 (b. Kansas, Dec 1883). Margaret is listed as a Colorado Pioneer having been documented as arriving there in 1868 with the El Paso County Pioneers Assn. of pioneer residents. This list is posted in the
Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, and carries the names of 1,254 persons who came to the area between 1857 and 1870. As of the 1900 US Census Hiram Abbey was 65 years old living in West Creek formerly Pemberton Colorado and he was married 17 years, (in 1883 but they were married during 1880 census so this is wrong some how), to 51 year old Margaret Abbey who was born in Missouri of Scotish parentage. He donated land in West Creek for both the school house and the cemetery. In 1910 US Census he and Margaret are still in West Creek which is between Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs, and living with son Russell Abbey age 26. Hiram died in 1914.
