Josephine "Josie" (Wagner) Caruthers, 79, died Tuesday, November 2, 2004, at York Hospital. She was the wife of the late John Clyde Caruthers, Jr.

Mrs. Caruthers was born in Johnstown on April 20, 1925, a daughter of the late Luin Fern and Mayme Beauty (Shaffer) Wagner.

She attended Chatham College for Women in Pittsburgh, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.S. Degree in Psychology and Sociology. She later earned her B.S. degree in Elementary Education at the University of PA. She taught at Downingtown Friends School, Downingtown; at public schools in Vineland, N.J. and Tom's River, N.J.; at Lancaster Christian School; Bible Baptist School, Shermanstown; Timothy Christian School, Piscataway, N.J.; Harrisburg Christian School; and the Christian School of York, where she was also a therapist at the National Institute of Learning Disabled Children. She was a member of MACSA- Middle Atlantic Christian School Association.

She volunteered for 11 years at Charleston Rescue Mission, Charleston, W.Va. and at America's Keswick, Whiting, N.J. She was a violinist for many years, playing in various symphonies and string ensembles. She was a member of York Alliance Church.

Mrs. Caruthers is survived by two daughters, Nancy Karns and Susan Gardner; 6 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a twin brother, Joseph W. Wagner. She was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Ann Wagner; and a grandson, Billy Karns.

A Celebration of Life service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the York Alliance Church, 501 Rathton Road, York. A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. The Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York is in charge of the arrangements.
