Fred Kane Died This Morning.
Report reached here today from Baker City that Fred Kane had died this morning at 6 o'clock. This puts an end, legally, to the mysterious, sensational tragedy that occurred near here several weeks since. The more unimportant details of that deplorable affair will be buried with him and speculation as to how it all happened should be guided by charity--for the living as well as the dead. . .[The Sumpter Miner. (Sumpter, Or.), October 10, 1900]
Provided by William Yates

Daniel was a miner. This article and the related article posted with Fred's step daughter, Ruth Toney, also buried in Mt. Hope, state Naomi's consistent claim that Fred appeared to be temporarily insane at the time of these tragic events. [See Ruth's Find A Grave Memorial for more details.] As a miner, toxic substances were used in the process that may help explain Fred's mental lapses during these events.

Further newspaper articles show Fred's consistent story that a third person was involved in the shootings and house fires, a story he maintained through his conversations with his Priest, where he was absolved, and to his deathbed.

FYI: Daniel's wife, and Ruth's mother, Naomi, survived the shooting, and was also buried in Mt. Hope in 1906. See Naomi B. Kane's Find A Grave Memorial where she retained the surname Kane at the time of her death.
