Nancy Louisa Marcum (also spelled Markham), born June 2, 1840 in McMinn County, Tennessee, was the daughter of Josiah Marcum and his second wife, Barbara Sherrill. Josiah Marcum was first married to Anna Sherrill and had three children with her: Ransom (1822-1900), Sarah (1825-1906) and Marvel (1827-1902). He married Barbara Sherrill, daughter of Eli Sherrill and Nancy McPherson, on December 2, 1834 in McMinn County, Tennessee. In addition to Nancy, Josiah and Barbara were parents of Eli Wilson Marcum (1835-1902) and Mary Marcum (1838-?). Josiah Marcum died in 1841 and his estate was entered into probate in the McMinn County Court on May 3, 1841 with Eli Sherrill the appointed administrator. On February 4, 1844 Barbara Marcum married James Wilson in McMinn County, Tennessee and they had four children, Margaret Mahalia, Martha, Ezekiel and Sarah Ann. Barbara Sherrill Marcum Wilson died in 1903 in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri where she lived with her daughter Margaret Hartle. According to court records, on September 1, 1845 Nancy Marcum and her two siblings were bound over to guardians. Nancy, age 6, was bound to Henry Walker and in the 1850 Federal census she was residing in his household in McMinn County. On July 30, 1864 Nancy married Calvin M. Dimmitt in McMinn County. Calvin was the son of Miles Dimmitt and Matilda West. Sometime before 1870 the Dimmitts settled in Jackson County, Missouri. Calvin and Nancy were parents of Mary, Sarah Josephine, William Watson, Ida O., Albert Franklin , Rosa May, Louisa Elizabeth, and an infant son b. & d. February 6, 1884. Nancy and Calvin Dimmitt lived the remainder of their lives in Jackson County, Missouri. Nancy died January 6, 1930. Her death certificate is posted on this site.
