Born November 13 1833 in Fort Osage Township area called Little Blue Bottom (Atherton) in Jackson County Mo. James attended Chapel Hill College for two years, one year at the University of Missouri and Jones Mercatile College in St Louis. graduating in 1859. He joined the confederate army in December 1861, a member of Company G, Colonal Reeves' Regiment commanded by Captain Kemper and attached to General Prices division. He was at the Battle of Pea Ridge and had to leave the army due to ill health after being in the hospital in Little Rock for two weeks. He returned to Jackson County and taught school in Clay County. After the war , he had a mercantile store in Pink Hill for eight years. He sold the store in 1876. James died at the age of 83 in his home south of Buckner.
