William Cornwell Sr., born 1795 at Independence Hill in Prince William County, Va, is the earliest Cornwell ancestor to arrive in Clark County, Illinois. William married Nancy Stifle around 1818. William is the son of JOHN RABBY CORNWELL and SARAH SALLY NORMAN of Prince Wm County, Va.
William Cornwell Sr. settled with his family near the town of Belpreville in Washington County, Ohio, in 1825. Belpreville is two miles from the Ohio River. On October 4, 1837, William Cornwell Sr. purchased a farm in Washington County, Ohio.
In the fall of 1849, William and Nancy Cornwell moved to Crawford County, IL. They came by wagon from Ohio by way of the National Road.
William Cornwell Sr. moved his family from Licking Twp, Crawford County, IL, to Melrose Twp, Clark County, IL, in the fall of 1854. On Christmas Day, 1858, William purchased the original Cornwell farm in Melrose Twp. This farm consisted of 30 acres located in the SW1/4 of NW1/4 of Section 29, Melrose Twp.
William Cornwell died in 1860 in Melrose Twp. He was ill for 8 days. He was buried at Olive Branch Church Cemetery without a headstone. His burial is recorded in the church cemetery book.
