He became a renegade running in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Jack was a gun-slinger and murdered, robbed, rustled cattle and well as doing some legitimate work. He was a member of the notorious Mason-Henry Gang that terrorized the San Joaquin Valley during the early 1860's. It was said he was a smart man and kept his dealings quiet but would shoot to kill upon the slightest provocation.
Jack lived with an Indian woman near the Tulare Lake and may have 'married' her. He 'found' a lost female Indian child named Chescott and she lived with him in Tailholt, now known as White River, Tulare County, California, until his death.
He formed a partnership with Samuel Groupie in a hog raising business. Hard feelings developed between them and they shot each other. Samuel was wounded but survived and cleared of murder. Jack was critically wounded and while dying arranged to have Chescott live with the Levi Mitchell family and wanted his entire estate given to her.
Jack died several hours later from the gun shot wounds about the age of 42 years.
