H. Dean Adams, 76, of Washington, Ill., formerly of Pawnee, Ill., passed away at 9:05 p.m. Sunday, May 12, 2013, at his home.

He was born Sept. 12, 1936, in La Jolla, Calif., but spent most of his life in the St. Louis metro area and central Illinois.

Dean was a graduate of East Saint Louis High School and went on to attend William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., graduating with a bachelor's degree. He was a member and former president of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. It was here he met Shirley Jeanne Kohler, and on Feb. 27, 1959, they were married.

Together they had three children, Stacy (Greg) Smith of Washington, Curtis (Cherie) Adams of Grant, Iowa, and Katherine (George) Boyle of Bloomington; and six grandchildren, Isaac Adams, Russell Smith, Samantha Smith, Charlie Adams, Erin Boyle and Jenna Boyle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank C. and Frieda Fern Seba Tedford.

Dean spent many years working in print advertising sales and management, first for the St. Louis County Star (1959-1979) and then for Tazewell Publishing in Morton, Ill., (1979-1989).

He was also active in the St. Louis Kiwanis Club throughout his years in that city.

He also enjoyed family vacations and fishing trips, exploring the great outdoors with his wife and children.

During retirement, Dean pursued his lifelong interest in gardening by becoming a Master Gardener. Always an avid reader, he devoured history and biographies along with his daily newspaper and magazines.

He and Shirley traveled to historic sites, as well as to blues and jazz festivals to hear the music he loved. He also picked up paints and pencils again to explore his love for visual art.

And Dean always made time to watch his beloved St. Louis Cardinals. From keeping stats at games he attended with his grandfather, to taking his own grandkids to games, Dean was a Cards fan to the end.

Funeral services for Dean will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 17, 2013, at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at Glendale Cemetery in Washington.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cure PSP, 30 E. Padonia Road, Suite 201, Timonium, MD 21093, or to OSF Hospice.

Dean's memorial website is available at www.deiters-funeralhome.com where condolences may also be sent to the family.
