C. William, or William C., was born somewhere in the Missouri Territory in March of 1819. His parents were supposedly born in North Carolina. A friend of his says he grew up with William in Boone Co., MO. According to William, he married Frances Elizabeth Andrews in August of 1839, Huntsville, the Randolph County seat. (Two of his friends say 1842, in his pension papers.)
In 1847 he served as a driver in the Mexican War, and traveled to Santa Fe. 1862 saw him called upon again for Civil War duty, again as a driver. Company H 9, Mo. S.M. Vol. Cav. He sustained an injury from this service, and was discharged.

Earlier in their marriage they lived in the northern Missouri area- Howard, Boone, Chariton Counties. Their later years they went south, to Dade County.
William and Frances E had 10 children together, so says the 1900 census, but only 3 survived to an older age.
