Lois Rita Airey March 7, 1917 - September 30, 2009 Norwich, CT

- Mrs. Lois Rita Airey of 382 Laurel Hill Ave. passed away Wednesday afternoon at Regency Heights (Haven Health Ctr.) of Norwich. She was born in Jewett City March 7, 1917 the daughter of Francis and Harriet (DeGarmo) Moriarty. A longtime Norwich resident Lois was a member of the first graduating class of the former St. Mary School in Jewett City. She had been employed for several years at the former Ponemah Mills of Taftville and later became a retail saleslady for H.A. Bruckner's and Brooklyn Outfitters of Norwich and Youth Colony in Groton. Lois had been united in marriage to Herbert Airey, who passed away August 30, 1984. Prior to her illness she was a longtime resident and active member of the community at Harry Schwartz Manor, and was a communicant of St. Mary's Church Norwich. Lois is survived by two sons Thomas S. Phalen and his wife Janis of Jewett City and Edward J. Phalen of Spring Valley, CA, four grandchildren Edward J. Phalen, Jr. of San Diego, CA, James Phalen of Alexandria, VA, Gregg Phalen of Ashburn, VA and Kathleen Phalen Marcos of Belmont, MA, 9 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews including a very special niece Fran Fischer of Eureka, CA. She was predeceased by 2 brothers Frank and John Moriarty and 2 sisters Marguerite Mitchell and Elizabeth Harvell. Funeral to assemble at Godere Funeral Home 21 North 2nd Ave. Taftville Saturday at 9:00 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church Norwich at 10:00 am. Burial to follow in St. Mary's Cemetery Lisbon. Calling hours are Saturday 8:00 am until time of funeral. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church 70 Central Ave. Norwich, CT 06360, The Backus Foundation 326 Washington St. Norwich, CT 06360 or to Hospice of Southeastern CT 227 Dunham St. Norwich, CT 06360.
