Irelene May Pendleton-Ellison

Irelene Ellison passed away peacefully at her home in Exeter, Saturday March 12, 2016 in the loving care of her niece Sandra Garner and Grand Niece Miriam McLain and husband Douglas McLain.

Born Irelene May Pendleton on April 05, 1930 at the U.S. Army Fort Sill Post Hospital, Fort Sill – Lawton, Comanche County, Oklahoma, she was the second child of Cordie Lee Pendleton who was born in Aurora, Lawrence County, Missouri and Lela Jane Polk-Pendleton who was born in Adkins, Pope County, Arkansas and her older sister Juanita Fay Pendleton who was born in England, Lonoke County, Arkansas.

Her mother Lela Jane lived 2 ½ short months after Irelene's birth and died. Lela Jane is buried at the Fort Sill Military Post Cemetery, Oklahoma. Irelene and Juanita were taken by their father to their paternal Pendleton Grandparents home and raised while their father was in the U.S. Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Irelene and her sister Juanita enjoyed living in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas on their Grandparents farm and attending school in Little Rock. Her father a widower was in the U.S. Army and he remarried to Delsie Pack and together with Irelene and her sister Juanita moved to Childress Texas Army Air Force Bombardier School. The sisters attended Childress, Texas schools.

Irelene married Beve Mills Jr in Childress, Texas in 1947. Beve died in 1948 leaving Irelene a widow.

Winter of 1948 Irelene moved to live with her sister in Exeter, California and their maternal Grandmother Cora Polk. Irelene married Earl Union Ellison on Sept. 11, 1950 in Reno, Nevada. They had no children, but as Irelene always said the whole City of Exeter were her children.

Irelene graduated from College of Sequoias Beautician School and opened her own shop in downtown Exeter in 1960. She was successful with her hair salon "Personality Hair Fashions" and by Jan 01, 1972 Irelene was able to retire.

Political office suited Irelene and she decided to enter into the race for the Exeter City Council and became the first City Council Woman of Exeter. She had been in business 12 years prior to her election.

• President of the Exeter Business and Professional Women's Club
• Mayor pro-tem succeeding Evelyn Van Scyoc

Irelene was very active in the Exeter Community.

She leaves behind two younger brothers Cordie "Lee" Pendleton Jr and Robert Henry Pendleton and many Nieces, Nephews and Pendleton & Polk Cousins from the Exeter area. She has two nieces Betty Jean Wolverton-George and husband David George now living in Ohio and Sandra Kay Wolverton-Garner who were her sister Juanita's children.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, her parents and sisters Billie Lou Pendleton-Sherwood, Clara Sue Pendleton-Cleghorn and Juanita Fay Pendleton-Kitchen-Wolverton-Price-Chambers, Niece Loretta Faye Kitchens-Wadlow - daughter of sister Juanita, and Nephew Richard Ray Wolverton Sr., who was the only birth son of her sister Juanita.

Arrangements are being handled by Smith Funeral Home of Exeter, California. Condolences may be made at www.smithfamilychapel.com.

Burial will be in the Nogo Cemetery, Arkansas where many Pendleton family members are resting along with Cordie Lee Pendleton, Sr. Irelene's Father.
