Louise J. Alexander (Gram) as she was known to most, was originally from Atlantic City, New Jersey. She was born to the Ethiopian son of slaves, Solomon Alexander and the European Caroline "Carrie" A. Wayman, in 1919. His parents were slaves to Mark Alexander of Mecklenburg, VA,. After the age of 19, she moved to Virginia and married Ralph Carr, Sr. Of their union she bore 3 children, Jeanette, Ralph Jr., and Ruth Ann (Casey).
Gram was the most loving and caring woman. She always helped others by taking them in and looking out for those that didn't have; although she didn't have much herself. Gram was very close to her grandchildren and adored her greatgrands before she died.
In September of 1990, 2 months after her 4th great granddaughter was born, Louise went to her daughter Jeanette's house but was unable to keep her balance. She was taken to Alexandria hospital where after several days, she was diagnosed with pneumonia and later on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or ALS, also known as Lou Gherig's Disease. Louise was unfortunately in the final stages of ALS having been misdiagnosed for so long by clinic doctors and the like. She passed away surrounded by her children and one sister and one granddaughter, Mona, on October 2, 1991 at 8:34am. She was cremated and her ashes were buried under a tree on M Street, NW, in Washington, DC on property belonging to her granddaughter Audrey Louise and grandson inlaw, George Nwanze.
