On May 21, 1898 he joined the US Navy. He was assigned to the USS Abarebda. Military Engagement: Guantanamo, Cuba, June 11, 12 and 13, 1898. He received an Honorable Discharge on January 17, 1899.

On August 15, 1898 he and Lucy were married at Fort Monroe, Virginia.

1910 US Census: They were living in San Francisco. Frank's occupation is shown as Immigration Inspector. There were four children: Horace L. Darton, stepson, age 16; Lucy G., daughter, age 10; Frank H., son, age 9; and Donald, son, age 6.

On April 2, 1917 he entered the United States Naval Reserve Force as a Lieutenant (provisional). By October 1, 1919, he had been confirmed as a Lieutenant Commander. On April 1, 1921 he received an Honorable Discharge.

1930 US Census: He and Lucy were still living in San Francisco on Fillmore Street, near Broadway.
