Dr. Laurence Guy Alexander BA, MD, MBE, MC, Order of St. John

Born in Fredericton Junction, New Brunswick, he served as a stretcher bearer in a mortar unit during World War I. He qualified as a family doctor and surgeon and lived in Calgary, Alberta. On March 1, 1941 at the age of 42 he enlisted with the 14th Army Tank Battalion, Calgary Regiment, better known as the Calgary Tanks, as the regiment's medical officer. Officially, he was a member of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. Captain Alexander served during Operation Jubilee (the Dieppe Raid) and the invasion of Sicily and Italy. After given command of the 6th Canadian Field Dressing Station, he was on the front lines during the liberation of Belgium and Holland. He was wounded at least three times, including twice at Dieppe where he earned the Military Cross and was inducted as a Member into the Order of the British Empire. Near the end of the Second World War he returned to his wife and four children in Calgary. Dr. Alexander was a committed doctor. He pioneered the use of Jeeps as ambulances, treated folks belonging to the Stoney Nakoda First Nation, served as the Calgary Stampeders' team doctor, and was a staff doctor for The Hudson's Bay Co. He was invited by the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Board to become a director, responsible for medical services for all activities involving Stampede facilities. That included hockey, wrestling, agricultural and skating shows, along with the Calgary Stampede itself. He died of a heart attack at age 69.
