Sylvanus Willis (aka Willes) Revolutionary War profile
Sylvanus Willis (aka Willes) was born in Windham, CT., March 26, 1756; lived in Windham, CT, Lebanon, N.H., and Royalton,, VT., and died at Potsdam, NY August 18, 1841.
In May of 1775, while residing at Windham, CT., he enlisted in Capt. Moseley's Company of Col Israel Putman's Regiment, and served seven and a half months as a private at Cambridge, MA. He did not participate in the Battle of Bunker Hill, but was stationed as a guard at a point from which he viewed the battle and the burning of Charlestown.
In the summer of 1776 he enlisted in Capt. Joshua Huntington's Company of Co. Sheldon's Regiment, Connecticut Line, which was stationed on Long Island; was in the retreat of Long Island, and discharged on Christmas Day1776; reached home the last day of that year, enlisted and served about two months as a private in Capt. Kendall's Company of Col Chase's New Hampshire Regiment; marched to Ticonderoga, and was discharged a few days before the investment of that place by Gen. Burgoyne.
At Windham, CT, in 1780, he enlisted and served as a private for three months in Capt. Steward's Company of Col. Wyllys' Regiment, and served out his time at Chatham, Moghegan, and Pocotomic, and other places in the state of Connecticut.
He next served in Capt. William Young's Company of Co. Storr's Regiment, Connecticut Militia, in 1781, called out to repel the invasion of Arnold, at the time when New London was burned.
