Dale Lyman Arave, 80, passed away July 14, 2010 at his home in Blackfoot from complications of cancer. He was born Sept. 13, 1929 in Jameston, Bingham County, at the home of his parents, Lyman Alma and Mary Louise Anderson Arave. Dale was the oldest child of 10.
Dale graduated from Salmon High School in Salmon in 1946 and later attended Utah State University, pursuing a degree in accounting. For many years he worked with his family in livestock and ranching pursuits. In the early 1960's he moved his family to Idaho Falls where he began his career as a general Contractor and real estate developer.
In 1979 he was elected to the Bingham County Board of Commissioners and remained in that office for 18 years. He married his high school sweetheart, Coleen Whiting in 1948. Dale and Coleen have always been active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and made it an integral part of their entire lives. Dale has served in many callings in the church including: Elder's Quorum president, bishop's counselor, bishop, High Council, and temple officiator.
In February 1997 Dale and Coleen were called to serve a full time mission to Papua, New Guinea, and then to southern Australia where they completed an 18 month mission. Upon their return in July 1998 they were called in August of 1998 to oversee the construction of the Birmingham, AL, LDS Temple. After returning from that mission in the fall of 2000 they were called to work in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple until the fall of 2009.
Even though his profession was in the construction business he enjoyed working with horses and rodeoing and cow cutting. Some of his honors include: All Around Cowboy in British Columbia,Canada, in 1958 and, later in life, he trained and participated in many cow cutting competitions throughout the Intermountain West where he won several awards. He was inducted into the Idaho Horseman Hall of Fame in 2009.
Dale will always be remembered for his love of his horses. He was an expert trainer and loved to spend countless hours doing this. He was training horses up until his 80th birthday in September 2009. Dale once stated that he was "A Jack of All Trades and a Master of None."
Dale is survived by his wife Coleen of 62 years; four sons, Gordon (Kathy), Tom (Pat), Brent, and Julio (Kathy) Talamantes (a former missionary companion of his son Tom, who later joined with his family); two daughters, Janet (Eric) Aikele of Moore, and Kim (Paul) Wolfley of Blackfoot; he is also survived by 27 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; brothers, Ralph (Verla), Neal (Karen), and Larry (Kari); sisters, Mae Kirkendall, Christine (Ron) Wheeler, and LaRae (Floyd) Rammell.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lyman and Louise Arave; three brothers Fred, Keith, and Gary; two grandchildren, Kris and Andrew Aikele; one great-grandchild Kaiden Nelson.
Funeral will be Monday, July 20, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Blackfoot LDS Stake Center with Bishop Darrell Lewis conducting.
