Akins, Elder William A.
"willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord?" (2 Corinthians 5:8)
Elder William "Billy" Akins, 63, passed away peacefully at Community Hospice House in Vidalia, Ga., on Monday May 10, 2010. A native of Bulloch County, Mr. Akins and his wife, Janis, had resided in Vidalia for the past 20 years.
Mr. Akins is survived by his faithful wife of 39 years of marriage, Janis Turner Akins, formerly of Fitzgerald. Immediate family survivors include two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Carl O. (Jean) Akins, twin brother, James E. "Jimmy" (Nancy) Akins; and Theresa L. Akins, all of Statesboro. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, many cousins and other relatives.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his eldest brother, John Roger Akins.
Mr. Akins was an honor graduate and president of the 1964 graduating class of Statesboro High School. He attended the University of Georgia and received a BBA degree from Georgia Southern College in 1968 and continued his post-graduate studies there after discharge from the United States Navy, serving in the Vietnam War. Later Mr. Akins became vice president of Holloway's Inc. of Statesboro. In 1973, Mr. Akins was ordained to the gospel ministry under the auspices of the Primitive Baptist denomination, serving as pastor of churches in Georgia and Florida during his active ministry. Mr. Akins, with his wife, Janis, served as co-managers of "Mostly Flowers" of Hilton Head Island, S.C., during the '80s. Until his death, he enjoyed his freelance florist, "Akins' Creations," of Vidalia, Georgia.
The funeral service was Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Joiner-Anderson Funeral Chapel in Statesboro, Ga., with Elder Randy Waters officiating, assisted by Elder W.H. Durrence. Interment Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Elder Shelton Mikell officiating.
Pallbearers will be Carl Akins Jr., Clint Akins, Jim Akins, Jason Akins, Paul Bennett and Cody Bennett.
Honorary pallbearers will be Primitive Baptist's Licentiates and elders in attendance.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 210 Jonathan Road, Statesboro, Ga. 30458.
