REHOBOTH - Bertha Winifred Abbott, 92, of Circuit Drive, Rehoboth, a loving and beloved mother, died peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007 at the LifeCare Center in Attleboro.
Born in Pawtucket on June 25, 1914, Mrs. Abbott was a daughter of the late William Dexter and Ella Nora (Snow) Allen. She was raised and educated in Pawtucket.
Bertha was very proud that she earned and received her General Education Degree from Rogers High School in Newport, R.I., in the late 1950s.
Mrs. Abbott was employed as an inspector at General Electric for 28 years, with the majority of the years employed in Newport and later several years employed in Cranston, R.I. During World War II, Bertha was employed as an inspector at the Torpedo Station in Newport.
She volunteered and taught crafts, including the making of shell jewelry at the Army-Navy YMCA in Newport.
While a resident of Newport for many years, Mrs. Abbott was a member of the United Baptist Church.
For the past 49 years, Bertha resided in Rehoboth.
She was currently a member of the Seekonk Memorial Baptist Church and was also a member of the Eliza Snow Missionary Society and the Martha Circle at the church. Bertha was a past president of the Sons of the Union Veterans Auxiliary in Rhode Island, a past president of the Amvets in Rehoboth, an honorary member of the Women's Activity Club in Rehoboth and an honorary member of the Gladys Hurrell Senior Center in Rehoboth.
In her later years, Bertha along with her late sister, Edith, developed a passion for golf. Bertha and Edith traveled and vacationed together, and also spent time painting, knitting, crocheting, and crafting ceramics while enjoying the company of each other.
Mrs. Abbott is survived by her beloved daughter, Eleanor W. Abbott, with whom she resided in Rehoboth; her loving son, James T. K. Abbott and his companion, Kathleen A. Brash of Hingham; and many nieces and nephews.
She was the beloved sister of the late William Allen, Frank Allen, Earl Allen, Eugene Allen, Louise Tinklenberg, Alma Allen, Frances Allen and Edith May Mann.
Family and friends are kindly invited to attend visiting hours on Friday, Feb. 9 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, 20 Peck St., Attleboro.
A funeral will be conducted on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. in the Seekonk Memorial Baptist Church, 340 Central Ave., Seekonk, by the Rev. David Lou Tripler. Due to the inclement weather and frost, burial will take place at a later date in the West Dighton Christian Church Cemetery in West Dighton.
