Born Johann Baltes, he was the son of Jacob Baltes and Elizabeth Becker. He emigrated from Germany as a young boy with his parents and siblings to America. The family resided in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
In 1888, he married Katherine Rudolph at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Scranton. She was the daughter of Stephen and Elizabeth Rudolph. To this union, there were four children: Elizabeth, George, Katherine and Anna. They were only married eight years when Katherine departed this life at the young age of twenty-seven years. John then married his second wife, Magdeline (Lena) Klein and they had seven children: Mary, Michael, John, William, Nikolas, Madeline and Genevieve.
John and his family resided in Scranton where he was a Tobacco Cutter and worked as a Foreman at the Clark & Scott Tobacco Company.
John departed this life on October 3, 1916, as a result of an accidental drowning.

FUNERAL OF JOHN BALTES
The body of John Baltes, of 614 Elm street, South Scranton, who was drowned when a boat he was fishing from at Sholiola Falls, between Milford and Hawley tipped over, was recovered Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, after a four days search. Mr. Baltes, accompanied by Edgar Betzel of Hamlin and another resident of that place, went on a fish trip early Tuesday morning. When the boat capsized, Baltes, who could not swim, was drowned, the other two men succeeding in reaching shore. Baltes was well known, he being a member of the Eagles and Knights of St. George, of this city. He was employed as a cutter, by the Clark & Scott tobacco company. He is survived by his wife and eight children.
The funeral was held this morning at 9 o'clock, when a high mass of requiem was celebrated over the remains at St. Mary's church, River street, by the Rev. Peter C. Christ, V. G. The pallbearers were selected from the member of the Eagles and the Knights of St. George. Burial was made in St. Mary's cemetery, at No. 5.
