Francis was born to Jacob and Rachel Cunningham Boles. On 6 Sept. 1862, Francis went off to fight for the Union in the Civil War. He was mustered in as a private in Co. C, 22nd PA Cavalry Regiment. He was involved in many engagements with his unit.

The 22nd Cavalry was at Greenland Gap, West Virginia on 25 February 1864 when Francis was hit and killed by a falling tree during an ambush at age 22.

His body was sent home to be interred. The entry in his family's Bible says: "Francis Moore Boles Departed this Life Feb. Twenty-fifth A.D. 1864.-At Greenland Gap, West Va. in the service of his country. - In peace, Children bury their Parents; In war, Parents bury their Children."

Jacob and Rachel outlived their son by nearly 30 years.
