Benard J. Berends, was born in Ogal [Ogle] county, near Adeline, Ill. Feb. 26, 1858. Died Jan. 11, 1918. Age 59 years 10 months and 17 days. He moved with his parents to Iowa in 1873; from there to Reno Co. Kans. in 1878. In 1885 he was married to Miss Louisa C. White. Afterward he moved to Commanche Co. Kans. and from there to the Panhandle of Oklahoma known then as "No Man's Land."

Eleven children were born to Mrs. and Mrs. Berends:
Mrs. Sarah DeSpain of Gate, Mrs. Clara Morris of Gate, Mrs. Dena Keith of Forgan, Mrs. Minnie Watt, Miss Anna Berends, Albert, George, Myrtle, and Lola at home.

Mrs. Kate Morris and Henry Berends deceased.

He leaves five brothers and one sister.

Uncle Ben had many friends and was known far and wide as big hearted, always ready to help a brother and every good cause. We will miss him, his place will be hard to fill. He was converted during the camp meeting last summer here at Gate, and joined the M. E. Church. He loved the Church and God's people, and while sick he wanted to attend the services. He left a testimony behind that he was ready to go, and that he was in God's hands. Over and over again while sick he would sing as he suffered "Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus."
