Earl Melvin Barsness was born Oct. 21, 1933, in Red Lake County near Oklee, the son of Peder and Albina (Plante) Barsness. After working in Montana he moved to Calumet and began working for Cleveland-Cliffs Mining Company as a machine operator. He retired in 1981 after 30 years of employment. For a short time, he worked for Rhude and Fryberg of Hibbing. He married Jerrian D. Schrunk on Aug. 25, 1954, in Grand Rapids where they made their home. He purchased and operated the Dairy King drive-in on Highway 38 from 1970 to 1974. He built four homes, his own and one for each of his children. Since retirement, he had assisted his son, Michael, at Barsness Service Center.

He is survived by his wife, Jerrian, Grand Rapids; a daughter, Jeen Ruff, Grand Rapids; two sons, Timothy and Michael, both of Grand Rapids; three brothers, Lloyd, Peder and Willard, all of Trout Lake; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, a sister, Norma Baron, and a grandson, Andrew J. Hughes.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Community Presbyterian Church.
