Melvin Butler Wheelock was a son of Arthur Alonzo "Artie" Wheelock (1866–1943) and Charlotte A "Lottie" Reed (1869-1940). His siblings were Spencer Denn Adelbert "Spence" (1892-1973), Clifford Morgan (1894-1985), and Hugh Orin (1900-1962).

By 1900, the family had moved to Knox, Ohio where his father was a farmer.

He married Helen Pauline Hershey (1895-1976) and they had Eugene M (1914-1974), Melva Helen Coleman (1915-1954), Charlotte Ruby (1917-1979) and Lee Albert (1922-2008).

In 1920, they lived in Cleveland where Bert was a tractor repairman.

He married Ruth Elizabeth Garber in 1928 and they had children Neil Arthur (1936-1938) and Melvin Anson (1932-?), who changed his name to John Dollar and went missing in the late 1970s. His whereabouts are unknown.

Bert and Ruth lived in a boarding house in Detroit in 1930 where he was a auto mechanic. They moved to Grosse Pointe Park and in the 1930's-40's where they had their own home and he was a mechanic.
