James Hudgens is the son of Drury Hudgens and Mary [?] Hudgens. James was born at Rocky Springs in Goochland County, Virginia.
James married Mary "Polly" Hunter in 1809 in Clark Co., Kentucky. They were the parents of ten children; William, Dudley Hampton, Shelby, John, Hampton Hamilton, Sarah "Sally", Katherine "Kitty", Crocket, Joseph and Carl.

James was a farmer living in Bear Creek Cove, White Co., TN in 1814.
He was killed at Wild Cat Creek in White Co., Tennessee.

James and Mary are buried in the Lowery Cemetery 3 miles east of Sparta, Tennessee at the Baxer place, at the foot of the mountains.
