Born in Launceston, the daughter of Lt WG Sturgess, Royal Navy (after whom Point Sturgess,Victoria, is named) and Georgina Margaret Hunt. She married Nicholas Sadleir at Geelong in 1874. He was born in 1834 and died in 1904 and is buried in Menindee Cemetery, NSW, Australia. He managed estates at Menindee and Westbury, Tasmania. Sister-in-law of John Sadleir (Brighton Cemetery, Melbourne), police superintendent, who commanded the final stages of the seige which led to the capture of the bushranger Ned Kelly at Glenrowan, Victoria. Three of her sons served voluntarily in British units in WWI, of whom one died in England as the result of war service(2nd Lt JR Sadleir). One of her daughters served as a military staff nurse in France (Etaples) and Taranto (Italy) from 1915 (QAIMNSR) and as a civilian volunteer in the Falkland Islands in 1939, nursing wounded from HMS Exeter following the battle of the River Plate.
