Freeman purchased 1000 acres of land for his plantation where he raised cotton and sugar cane, and was also a shipping merchant with a steamboat (The Aligator) plying the Cypress Bayou to Sherveport Louisiana. Three of his daughters died young and his only son died at age 29 from a horse accident. When his wife passed on December 30th of 1865, he decided he did not want to live his life without his wife, so decided to stop eating, went to his upstairs bedroom at the Plantation laid himself down by the fireplace, where he died 14 days later. The Freeman plantation has been added to the Library of Congress as being an important example of Greek Revival Architecture.
