Al Barnes was a local Traverse City historian. He worked for the Traverse City Record-Eagle from 1937 to 1967, and was a combat photographer in the U.S. Navy during W.W.II. He wrote 4 books on Grand Traverse Region History: "100 Years from the Old Mission" (1939), "Vinegar Pie & Other Tales" (1959), "Supper in the Evening" (1967), and "Let's Fly Backward" (1976). He also wrote his Century Notes column for the weekly Preview, researching newspaper stories from 100 years earler (he also had this column previously in the Record-Eagle).
