He was the son of the late Zachariah William Claxton and Lynora Sedar Claxton. He was married for 65 years to the love of his life, Helen "Tiny" Moore Claxton, who preceded him in death in 2005. He was also preceded in death by his infant daughter, Culbreth Claxton in 1947 and precious daughter, Beth Claxton Eckman, in 1997. -As a young man growing up on the family farm, Mr. Claxton learned very early the value of an education. He was the only boy in his Kite High School graduating class. He continued his education by first attending Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and then completing his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Georgia. That was no easy task given that he had to hitchhike back and forth and borrow books to study. -During World War II, he worked in the shipyard at Newport News, Virginia. Mr. Claxton, a devout Christian, was a lifelong member of Gumlog Primitive Baptist Church and a founding member of the Claxton Reunion. He spent many hours tending the cemetery grounds. -Mr. Claxton became Superintendent of Johnson County Schools in 1956. He subsequently earned his Master's degree in Education Administration Supervision. He served as Superintendent for 20 years during which he personally presented all four of his daughters with their high school diplomas. In 1970, the Johnson County Schools integrated peacefully under the guidance and wisdom of Mr. Claxton and the Board of Education. -Always a farmer at heart, he kept and cared for his cattle and made daily trips to the farm in his 90's. He was also well-known for maintaining his lawn - always using a pushmower in the heat of the day. -Mr. Claxton is survived by his daughters, and sons-in-law, Paige and Bobby Riley of Macon, Jane and Pete Carter of Dry Branch, and Linda Claxton of Macon; grandsons, Jeff (Catherine) Riley of Macon, Jeremy (Kristi) Riley of Macon, Jason Carter of Dry Branch, and Cameron Claxton of Macon; granddaughter, Logan (Jesse) Gonzalez of Brandon, FL; great grandchildren, Allison Riley, Jill Riley and Luke Riley, Toni Cainion and Dominic Gonzalez, Brianna Carter and Jacob Carter; sisters, Annette (George) Ivey of Kite, Willouise Spivey of Marietta, and a host of nieces and nephews. -Donations in Memory of Mr. Claxton may be made to Gumlog Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Faye Brantley, Route 1, Kite, Georgia 31049 or to Nightingale Hospice, 606 West Court Street, Wrightsville, Georgia 31096. -Pallbearers will be nephews Nick Ivey, Jimmy Ivey, Joel Scott, Edwin Claxton, Bob Spivey, Zach Claxton and Wayne Brantley. Honorary pallbearers will be his four grandsons
