Jim became an Insurance Broker and enjoyed a thirty-five year career in the health insurance industry. In addition he served his country in the United States Coast Guard.
Baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter - day Saints on October 21, 1984, the LDS Church became a focal point of his life. Jim served wholeheartedly in his many and varied church callings including Bishop of the Santa Monica II Ward for over five years.
Jim and Carlene were married in the Los Angeles Temple of the LDS Church on August 17, 1985. They served together in a variety of church callings as well as full - time missionaries in London, England (24 months). They also served together in the Los Angeles Temple for many years. His volunteer assignments included Ordinance Worker, Director of Baptistry, Assistant Recorder, and Sealer. Even after his stroke in May 2013, he continued faithfully serving as a wheel-chair bound temple patron until just a few weeks prior to his death.
Jim's greatest life gifts were caring, helping, and sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with others. He always had an interesting story to tell. In his fraternity years he was given the nickname of "Bilbo" after a famous US Senator, who was a master filibuster. Jim especially enjoyed reading the Holy Scriptures gaining inspiration and comfort from them.
He is survived by his loving wife of twenty-nine years, Carlene, his brother Rod Dean, his son Brevin Dean, and four grandchildren: Grant, Parker, Clayton, and Hunter. He was preceded in death by his two children, Vriana and Brian, and a sister, Janet.
