John Vincent Borkowski was born to Wladyslaw and Helena (Karwoska) Borkowski in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York. He was the third of their three children. He graduated from the New York Merchant Marine Academy at Fort Schuylar, NY in 1937. He loved the sea. Upon the attack at Pearl Harbor, he joined the US Navy where he was given a commission due to his merchant marine experience. He spent WWII aboard destroyers, The Livermore in the North Atlantic, and the Kimberly, in the Pacific. He ran the engine rooms and rose to the rank of LTCommander,USNR by the end of the war. His days in the Navy during the war were a great source of pride in having served his country.
He married Shirley Eileen Ashurst in New Orleans, La. on Aug. 27, 1947. To them were born 2 daughters, Diane and Patricia. He worked as a marine engineer both in New Orleans, NY and NJ for Foster Wheeler Corp. and later was a Vice President of Friede and Goldman Naval Architects back in New Orleans. He retired in 1977 and he and Shirley moved to Slidell, Louisiana for their retirement.
Sailing was always his favorite pastime with numerous sailboats owned during his life time. Whether it be on Long Island Sound or Lake Ponchartrain and the Gulf, most weekends found him on the water enjoying sailing or fishing. He was a member of the Southern Yacht Club of New Orleans and the Setauket Yacht Club of Setauket, NY.
He was very devoted to his wife and helped her through illness the last 9 years of her life. He missed her terribly after she passed away in 2003. He leaves behind his two daughters, six grandchildren and nine grgrandchildren.
