Henry S. Butts was a lifelong bachelor farmer. He owned and worked the Old Butts Farm about a mile northeast of Garnavillo, Iowa. After retiring from farming at about age 60, he took up fishing the Mississippi.
When his years caught up with him, he moved into the Clayton County Home northeast of Elkader where he lived the last 7 years of his life.
When he died his funeral was held at the County Home. Having no family he was laid to rest in the county's pauper cemetery behind the County Home.
