George William COLLIER – 71, Lower Sackville, passed away suddenly, with his loving family at his side, on Wednesday evening, September 18, 2013, at Centenniel Building, VG Site, QEII, Halifax. Born July 7, 1942, in Truro, he was a son of the late William and Alma (MacKay) Collier.
George was a long-time member of Knox United Church, Lower Sackville, where he served as treasurer for 30 years, served on the finance committee, sang in the choir and played the piano and organ for services on occasion. He had a great love for Scottish Country Dancing and performed on many occasions in the Nova Scotia International Tattoo.
George and his wife enjoyed many trips abroad, however, he was most at home at the hockey rink, being "Hockey Grampie" and enjoying "rink fries". Thanksgivings at Bayswater, Berwick United Church Camp and excursions with family and friends were times that George and Jean cherished. Following his retirement from the Provincial Government, Department of Social Services, George began working at Trade Centre Limited and The Metro Centre. For George, this was not only a job, but a place he looked forward to going to; he met many fine friends during his time there and immensely enjoyed the interaction with all the patrons.
George is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Jean MacLellan (Withrow); children, Mary-Beth (Dean) Fancy, Glenn (Cathy Brooks), Lower Sackville; grandchildren, Jacob, Matthew, Leah, Dorian; Leah's mother, Monique Collier, Dartmouth; sister, Betty Johnson, Bible Hill; brother, Robert (Sylvia) Harrison, Halifax; sister-in-law, Joy (Michael) Cameron, Prince Edward Island; brother-in-law, R.F. Withrow, Bible Hill; several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his son, David Farish Collier in infancy; sister, Patricia (Edmund) Casey; brother, Paul Collier; step-mother, Vera (Harrison) Collier.
Special thanks are extended to Reverend Dr. Ross Bartlett, Reverend Dr. Ida Armstrong-Whitehead and our family and friends who have kept us in their thoughts and prayers for the past three months. To Dr's Graham Bullock, John Ross, Carman Giacomantonio, André Bernard, Rob Green, David Wilson, Steve Smith, and Jason Emsley; your immense kindness, support and caring will always be remembered. To staff of 3A (ICU), especially Nurses Carol, Johanna, Ronna and Audrey, your care, empathy and compassion provided George and us great comfort. We thank-you.
George's family will receive friends from 2-4, 6-8 p.m., Sunday, September 22, 2013, in Knox United Church, 567 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville, where the funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Monday, September 23, 2013, Reverend Dr. Ross Bartlett officiating. Reception will follow in the church hall. Interment in Rawdon Gold Mines Cemetery. Family flowers only. If so desired, donations in George's memory to Knox United Church (Organ Fund) or Berwick United Church Camp are welcomed, or, in George's words, "Do something kind for somebody." Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro.
