Susanna Margaretha ("Margaretta") Gaubatz was born July 8th, 1807 in Dietzenbach, Starkenburg, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, a daughter of Johann Peter Gaubatz and Anna Catharina Roeder. Her mother had an older illegitimate daughter Anna Maria Roeder who was born in 1792. After her marriage to Margaretta's father, Johann Peter Gaubatz in 1799, she had 5 more children: Johann Thomas in 1799, Johann Jacob in 1800, Johann Adam in 1802, Maria Catharina in 1804, and the youngest was Susanna Margaretha born in 1807. When Margaretha was just six, her mother Anna Catharina died in 1813 leaving the 5 young children. Her oldest daughter Anna Maria Roeder (half-sister of Margaretta) who was then 21 and the widowed husband Johann Peter Gaubatz became common-law husband and wife the next year. The church had refused to let them marry since Anna Maria had been Johann Peter's step-daughter. They had 6 children together, born between 1814 and 1828 (half-siblings of Margaretta): Johann Peter born 1814, Carl born 1817, Johann Heinrich in 1819, Anna Margaretha in 1822, Anna Maria Dorothea in 1825, and Johann Leonhard Gaubatz in 1828.
Susanna Margaretha was married to Christian Beckmann February 28th, 1836 in Dietzenbach where they started a family. In about 1846, they brought their family of 2 children (Philip Casimir Beckmann and Maria Catharine Beckmann) to America. A 3rd child Maria Eleanora Beckmann was born in 1848 after their arrival.
They settled at the German settlement in St. Clair County, Illinois along with many other families who were also from Dietzenbach. Margaretha's sister Catharina Gaubatz who had married Johannes Wagner in 1837 in Dietzenbach Germany also came to America settling in St. Clair County. The Wagners stayed in St. Clair County and are buried at the Darmstadt Memorial Cemetery there. Margaretha's younger half-sister Anna Maria Dorothea had married in Germany in 1850 to Johannes Georg Reppel, and they also came to America settling in St. Clair County.
In the 1860's Margaretha and her husband Christian Beckmann decided to move to Effingham County, Illinois along with their daughters' families (Catherine and Michael Schroth, and Mary and Fred Deichmann). They lived on a 20-acre plot adjacent to Fred Deichmann near Shumway. In their later years, Margaretha and Christian moved in with their daughter Mary and her husband Fred Deichmann who had moved to the town of Effingham in 1890. Christian died at their home in 1894, and Margaretha lived several years after. They were buried in the German Methodist Church cemetery in Shumway, but no markers remain to show the location.
