Benjamin Robert Dysart, born to Matilda Brooks and John Dysart, was one of ten children. He and his wife, Emma Valinda Turner, were married in St. Louis, Missouri in 1866. They raised two daughters, Mary Maude and Pearl Dysart. Major B. R. Dysart served in the confederate army under General Sterling Price. He was a lawyer, a Democrat, a Presbyterian, and a member of the 1875 convention which formulated Missouri's constitution.
