John was a son, brother, friend, volunteer, paramedic, practical joker, and someone who had the ability to touch people's lives just by being himself.

Career-wise, John was a paramedic for EmergyCare, Inc. and he loved his job. He had hopes of someday becoming a police officer, and was an Assistant Deputy Coroner for Erie County as well as a volunteer of the Emergency Medical Services Division at Kuhl Hose Fire Department in Greene Township. John was an active volunteer for The March of Dimes, and often coordinated safety for various "walk for donation" activities--Walk America, Diabetic Walk, and Alzheimer's as well.

John was an amazing and charismatic person to be around. You always had to be "on alert" with him, because he was such a prankster with family, friends, and co-workers. He was a perfectionist, especially in his attire and his profession, and he expected others to be as well. John could drive a person crazy, but he was filled with such good-nature, that you couldn't help but laugh along with him. John had beautiful sapphire blue eyes that would just dance whenever he was up to something. He enjoyed volleyball, '80s music, and was scared witless of dragonflies. He could eat his weight in chocolate, and adored McDonald's Filet o'Fish sandwiches. He loved Christmas and always acted like a little kid around the holidays; though he was stingy and economical for himself, he was always generous to a fault for the sake of others.

John passed away in his sleep of congestive heart failure brought about by a condition known as myocardial fibrosis, a hardening of the heart muscle that likely began as early as the age of 3. He was 27. Our parents and I established a fund in John's name: The John J. Devon Memorial Education Fund, for the continuing education and training of those interested in pursuing the Emergency Medical Service field. Being my brother, he was often a blessing and a curse to me growing up--but I am so proud of the person he was and the impression that he left on those who remember him.
