Anita L. Brainard, age 81, of Waukon, died Friday, February 14, 2003, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 18 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon.Anita was born in Guttenberg (IA), the daughter of Gustav and Mabel (Lundt) Borcherding. She was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Guttenberg, confirmed at Highland Lutheran Church in Elkader, and attended rural Clayton County Schools. On April 12, 1943, she married Milo K. Brainard in Elkader. They lived for a short time in Dubuque where they both worked at the battery factory. They returned to northeast Iowa where they farmed north of Luana until 1978. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon and its ladies group. Anita enjoyed playing cards, traveling to the riverboat casino with her friends, and raising a garden. She also loved spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Brainard of Waukon and Amy Moses of Luana; two grandchildren, Joseph and Jacob Moses; and a sister, Noraline (Lloyd) Lamborn of Monona.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Milo; a son, James; a son-in-law, Bruce Moses; a granddaughter, Jessi Ann; and four brothers, Arthur and infants Lavern, Virgil, and Gus Roy Borcherding.
